We have a new tile showroom that is now carrying our tile. How cool is that. They are putting our grapevine backsplash in one of the kitchen demos. The single tile shown here is 9″ x 12″ with 3″ molding goes above the sink area. The field tile and moldings aren’t glazed yet. We cut the half tiles and the miters with a tile saw then sand smooth the sharp spots and glaze them so they don’t have a rough edge.
We used the Bailey DRB 30″ slab roller we bought off craiglist last year to make all the field tile for the job. What took days before with a rolling pin now takes a few hours…totally awesome.
I really like that tile. Still one of the best layouts I’ve seen. I need to re-prioritize and get back to making stuff like.
Thanks Kyle, we like making it too. We’re making 16 tile sample boards for the showroom that I’ll post when we get them fired. I check your blog every few days…waiting for you get get a crackalackin.
Gorgeous.
Thanks mcnorman!
Have you thought about making a slipcast mold for your tile? You would lose some of the relief detail, but you could quickly carve some of that detail back in at the leather hard stage.
Yes we’ve thought about doing that. We did make plaster molds of the grapes. At first we rolled little balls out and make the grapes but we were getting air pockets. So we made them and poured plaster over them and peeled the soft clay back out.
It takes us about 5 hrs to make the big one by hand and no two are a like. If we do make a mold of the whole thing I think we would cast the slab, leaves and grapes then apply the leaf veining and the tendrils.
I’ll post the awesome little accent 6×6 tile Angi did of the grapes, it’s way cool.
