I really thought I was on to something with this project by alas…NO! I like to use the potters wheel to brush glaze much of my work, I enjoy the linear quality of that technique so a nice variable speed banding wheel seemed like a great idea. So why not whittle one.
I’ve had several people comment on my DIY Potter’s Wheel post wondering if they could substitute using a fan motor instead of the treadmill motor. I’ve always told them no and I was right, a fan doesn’t even have the touque to even keep going at slow speeds brushing on glaze.
I used the motor from a box fan cannibalized then attached to a piece of poplar. I tried to achieve variable speed with a sliding rheostat and one of our corian bats for the head. I’m glad I didn’t take the time to enclose this piece of crap.
Try and try again.
